As a member-owned cooperative, Tipmont takes a different view toward energy use than many peers in our industry.
Namely, we want our members to use less energy, helping you save money and helping us best preserve the infrastructure to serve you. It’s a notion that becomes especially noteworthy amid weather extremes like those we’ve seen in recent winters.
Acknowledging no two homes are built the same, the U.S. Department of Energy says many homes send up to a quarter of heating (and cooling) costs right out the door and windows. That’s because air you’ve paid to heat or cool escapes through poorly sealed windows and doors, and other common penetration spots.
Sealing those areas is the first step of a sound winterizing strategy you’d be smart to start this autumn. In 90 minutes or less, Kevin Carpenter — our certified, trusted energy advisor — can give you personalized recommendations on how to save on your monthly energy bill.
Kevin will investigate leaks, look for large energy loads you may be unaware of, and gauge how well the air you heat throughout the winter (or cool in the summer) remains in your home.

In the meantime, here are some easy and everyday energy efficiency tips to consider as winter approaches:
- Keep your air vents clear: When furniture or other items are placed in front of vents, they cannot efficiently circulate air in your home. To that same effect, keep interior doors open to allow proper air circulation.
 - Check your fireplace: If your home has a fireplace, be sure to close the damper to prevent cold drafts from countering the heat inside.
 - Use the sun to your advantage: During the day, open your blinds, shades and drapes to allow sunlight to warm your home. At night, close them to preserve insulation.
 - Turn ceiling fans clockwise: If you haven’t already: Turn your ceiling fans clockwise at the same time you set your clocks back for daylight saving time. Use low speeds to pull cold air up and push warm air down into your living spaces.
 - Replace your HVAC filters: If you can’t remember when you last did this, it’s probably time. Fresh filters help your HVAC system run smoother and longer.
