Tech Tips: Avoid Double Trouble and Don’t Use a Second Router

Whenever you need internet support, our local experts at Tipmont are ready to help. But we also want to share some proactive tips and best practices to help keep you connected.

Today, we’re talking about modems and routers — namely the issues you can introduce by plugging a second router into equipment that Tipmont provides.

First, a brief refresher: Although modems and routers are often merged inside one device (like the one Wintek provides), they are two differently defined terms. A modem sends and receives signals from an internet service provider like Tipmont while a router distributes that signal to devices on your network — like your phone, tablet or streaming device — so you can connect to the internet.

Your monthly internet service package includes leading-edge modem and router technology from Tipmont, which we regularly upgrade and enhance through automatic updates.

Whether the rationale is related to performance or preference, adding a second router of your own might seem harmless. But doing that can cause frustrating connectivity issues where your internet access will drop out unexpectedly and intermittently, or altogether until you unplug the other router.

Do you have your own router that you would prefer to use? Just call us, and we’ll shift your Tipmont equipment to bridge mode — making it function solely as a modem.

Concerned about signal strength in parts of your home? A mesh unit is a simpler solution to enhance coverage. For a small additional monthly fee, Tipmont can provide you with a mesh unit.

If you have questions on this, or another internet issue, feel free to call us at 800-726-3953, email help@tipmont.com or start a chat. You will always reach a live person from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
