Garden or play? Stay away from padmount transformers

Do you have a metal, box-shaped transformer near your home that’s green or gray?

It’s called a padmount transformer, and it helps provide power to neighborhoods like yours that have underground utilities. And while it may be tempting for you to paint or plant around for aesthetics, or for children to use when playing, you should:

  • Never paint or decorate the box
  • Never install landscaping near the box
  • Never play on the box
  • Never attempt to access the box yourself

For safety to you and any utility worker, the padmount transformer should always be locked and its warning signs visible.

Tipmont must be able to access padmount transformers at all times in the event of a service outage or to perform routine maintenance.

Here are some tips to remember about your padmount transformer to stay safe!

  • Keep at least 10 feet of clearance in front of the padlocked side of the transformer.
    • Keep at least four feet of clearance on the other sides.
  • Do not plant trees or shrubs too close to the transformer.
  • Contact Tipmont if you notice damage, such as a hole or broken lock.
  • Call or contact 811 prior to digging a transformer or anywhere in your yard to avoid hitting an underground cable.
  • Maintain a clear path to the transformer at all times.
    • While “in your yard,” it’s technically on an easement and workers need clear access.
