SmartHub will be briefly unavailable due to maintenance at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10. We anticipate the service will be available again after several minutes.

Simple ways to improve your Wi-Fi with CommandIQ®

When streaming buffers, video calls freeze or a device keeps dropping offline, it’s easy to assume something is wrong with your internet service. Sometimes, though, the issue is simply Wi-Fi inside the home.

That’s where the free CommandIQ® app — available for Apple and Android devices — can help.

Start by tapping Speed Test on the app’s home screen. CommandIQ® will show your download speed, upload speed and latency — the short delay between when your device asks for something online and when it begins getting a response.

The app also rates the Wi-Fi strength of connected devices as Strong, Good or Fair. Devices farther from your router or mesh unit will usually have a weaker signal, although walls, furniture and large appliances can also interfere with Wi-Fi.

WHAT STRONG, GOOD AND FAIR MEAN

  • “Strong” signal: -55dBm or stronger
  • “Good” signal: -56 to -67 dBm.
  • “Fair” signal: -68 dBm or weaker

Next, tap Home Network to see how your devices are connected. This screen gives you a simple view of your router, any mesh units and the devices linked to each one. It’s a handy way to spot weak coverage in certain rooms or areas of the house. If one device has a weak connection, try moving it closer to the router or mesh unit. If several devices struggle in the same area, your router may need a better location.

You can also make a few easy fixes yourself:

  • Restart your router from the app if devices seem sluggish.
  • Check whether walls, metal objects, large appliances or furniture may be blocking Wi-Fi signal in problem areas.
  • Consider adding a mesh unit if you have a consistent dead zone.
  • Place mesh units in open spaces, not behind furniture or inside cabinets.

If you believe router placement is contributing to weak Wi-Fi throughout the home, or if you’re interested in adding a mesh unit, give Tipmont a call at 800-726-3953, ext. 4 to discuss your options. We’ll help determine whether a technician visit is the next best step.
