When it’s hot and humid outside, it can sometimes be difficult to keep your cool (literally and figuratively). However, keeping your (literal) cool indoors can help you keep more green in your wallet. Here are some steps you can take.
Properly use your doors, windows and curtains
You can benefit from turning off the A/C and opening windows during the evening to let the natural breeze cool your home. Open doors inside your home to circulate air when windows are open or when the A/C is running. During the day, close curtains to prevent the sun from heating up your home.
Program your thermostat
Set a programmable / WiFi thermostat to cool only when you are home and to go a few degrees higher when you are away. This is a great way to set yourself up for energy efficiency!
Ensure air conditioner efficiency
Schedule an A/C cleaning and tune-up with a local, licensed HVAC contractor to review your system and ensure it’s running properly. Check your air filter each month and replace it if it’s dirty to allow proper airflow and prevent your system from working harder than necessary.
Keep your garage door down
If your garage is attached, keep the door down to maintain cooler air and save energy.
Seal, insulate and equip
Start by sealing attic air leaks, including ductwork. From there, ensure proper insulation to help maintain your home’s temperature. Attic insulation less than R-19 (typically less than six inches of the fluffy stuff) can benefit from additional insulation. Empty walls should be filled.
