Electric rates to increase

Effective Feb. 22, 2026, Tipmont’s residential electric rate (paid by most members) will increase from $0.1226 to $0.1272 per kilowatt hour (kWh). There will be no increase to Tipmont’s service charge, a fixed monthly charge that partially covers local infrastructure costs.

As a not-for-profit distribution cooperative, Tipmont purchases wholesale electricity and distributes it to your homes, farms and businesses. We operate at cost, meaning the goal is for Tipmont to break even.

It’s no secret that energy prices have risen substantially in recent years. Among the many influencing factors are the price volatility of natural gas, coal plant retirements and replacement costs, transmission infrastructure investments, supply chain disruptions and material cost inflation. U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data report that Indiana residential energy prices have increased by nearly 30% since 2020. By comparison, Tipmont’s energy rate has increased by about 16% over that same time.

Tipmont’s strategy is to excel at what we control and fight on your behalf everywhere else. Our recent member satisfaction scores tell us we’re doing a good job.

On June 1, 2025, Tipmont exited its membership with Wabash Valley Power Alliance (WVPA), our long-time power supplier. As such, Tipmont is now a WVPA customer, purchasing power supply from WVPA in quantities that annually decrease to zero in 2032.

This decision was made so we could bring our largest cost – wholesale power supply – under our control and use the open energy market to purchase wholesale power at the best possible rate, while avoiding unnecessary and unplanned costs that we incurred as a WVPA member.

This transition will also allow us to better forecast and plan. But in the short-term, Tipmont’s control is limited in the cost increases affecting the entire energy sector.

One action we did take was to reduce our 2026 operating budget to offset as much as possible without sacrificing the quality of service you deserve. As a not-for-profit cooperative, we will continue to do everything in our power to keep your rates as low as we can while continuing to provide the high level of service you deserve.
