Electric Rates

July 2025 Rate Increase

Tipmont is a not-for-profit cooperative and we strive every day to manage costs while continuing to provide the reliability and value you deserve.

Tipmont’s energy rate is increasing because our costs have gone up. The service charge — a fixed monthly cost to install and maintain infrastructure — is not changing.

Below are the rate changes for each rate class. The majority of Tipmont’s members are Rate 1 / Single Phase. If you are not sure of your account’s rate class, it is listed on the back side of your bill.

Information for Tipmont Members

July 2025 Rate Increase

Effective with the July 22, 2025 billing cycle, Tipmont’s energy charge increased from $0.1165 per kWh to $0.1266 per kWh.

The service charge is not changing.

For the average Tipmont residential monthly bill, this is an increase of about $6.

kWh charges 1,000
Kilowatt Hour (kWh) charges represent the amount of electricity used during the billing period, calculated by multiplying your total kWh usage by the applicable energy rate in the Tipmont Rate Tariff. A kWh is a measurement of energy used over time and the basis for how electric bills are calculated. The median Tipmont monthly usage is about 1,000 kWh.
$0.1226 $122.60
Power Cost Adjustment
Power Cost Adjustment is an adjustment made to your electric bill to reflect fluctuations in the true cost of power Tipmont purchases to distribute to your home. The fluctuation is largely caused by changes in the cost of fuel for generation. For the purposes of this example, we are using a Power Cost Adjustment of $0.0069.

Frequently Asked Questions

The following are common questions members ask regarding their rates and their bills.

If you have additional questions, please contact us

Significant changes in the electricity market are increasing Tipmont’s costs, including:

  • Faster growth than expected for electricity demand (1.4% annually
    from 2025-2030)
  • Additional strain on the electric grid with a shift toward electricity as a primary energy source for everything from vehicles to stoves
  • Recent regulatory and policy shifts away from renewable energy sources, while about 20 gigawatts of fossil fuel plants are still expected to retire by decade’s end

In addition, local infrastructure and material costs have gone up. In the span of three years, electric lines cost 25% more, transformers cost 30% more, bucket trucks cost 35% more, and the cost of burying lines — Tipmont’s most effective long-term strategy to boost your service reliability — has risen 250%.

Despite these pressures, Tipmont has managed to keep its electric rate increases to half the rate of inflation amid significant local system growth and a considerable number of severe weather events.

No. Earlier this year, Tipmont reached an agreement to stop purchasing wholesale power from Wabash Valley Power Alliance (WVPA).

Tipmont now purchases only power from WVPA and no other WVPA services. Tipmont will purchase that power at WVPA’s 2023 rates, and the amount of power Tipmont purchases will decrease annually through 2032. At that time, Tipmont will no longer purchase power from WVPA.

The July 2025 rate increase is due to increased costs and uncertainty, as outlined in the question above.

Tipmont’s service charge is a fixed amount on your monthly bill required to deliver electricity and maintain the system that serves you. A majority of members pay a $38 monthly service charge. The service charge is separate from the energy charge, which is the cost of how much energy you use.

No. Only the rate charged for energy use has changed.

If you need assistance paying your bill, you can find information at tipmont.com/energyassistance.

No. The prices for Tipmont’s internet service are not changing.
