Whenever you need internet support, our local experts at Tipmont are ready to help. But we also want to share some proactive tips and best practices to help keep you safe when you’re online.
Today, we’re talking about recommendations when you’re using public WiFi.
Public WiFi is a great way to stay up to speed when you’re on the go, and if you’re connected to one of Tipmont’s public WiFi networks, you can do it blazing-fast.
But you’ll want to use caution whenever you connect to any public WiFi network. Why? It’s right there in the name. A public WiFi network is not protected by a password, so anyone can access it. And that means it’s easier for cybercriminals to access, and steal, your online information.
Here are some recommendations to stay safe when using a public WiFi connection:
- Use caution and care when visiting websites that require a password or personal information, including social networking sites, online banking services or websites that store your credit card information.
- If you need to access these sites from a public WiFi network, consider using a VPN to do so for an extra layer of protection.
- If you’re using a laptop, make sure your anti-virus software is up to date. This is a good idea for any type of internet access, whether public or password-protected.
- If you have a firewall, keep it enabled when using a public WiFi network.
- Make sure the sites you visit on a public WiFi network only use HTTPS rather than an unencrypted HTTP connection.
These tips can help keep you safe when connecting wherever your journeys take you.
