Camp Kilowatt
Each year, Tipmont sponsors students to attend Camp Kilowatt (formerly Touchstone Energy Camp) at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, IN. This fun, powerful and unique camp experience is designed for students entering seventh grade in 2024. The students’ agenda will combine traditional outdoor camp activities with environmental education, electrical safety practices and cooperative business education.

Students are selected by Tipmont and notified in March. Once you submit the application, there is nothing further you need to do.

The Camp Kilowatt program was developed by a committee of electric cooperative employees from Indiana. The camp is funded in part by Indiana’s electric cooperatives, Hoosier Energy, Wabash Valley Power, Indiana Electric Cooperatives and other industry partners.

Students entering seventh grade this fall were eligible to attend and were selected by their local cooperative to participate in the four-day program. The students’ agenda combined traditional outdoor camp activities with environmental education, electrical safety practices and cooperative business education.

Questions parents may have about Camp Kilowatt.
Camp Kilowatt is an annual summer camp experience held every June at Camp Tecumseh in Brookston, Ind., for students across Indiana entering seventh grade.
Horseback riding, canoeing, rock climbing, zip lining, archery, swimming and other traditional summer-camp activities are combined with activities that educate about the electric and fiber industries — including a live line demonstration, an electrical pole climbing tutorial, bucket truck rides and various activities involving circuit boards, renewables and internet safety.
A child must apply to attend Camp Kilowatt, and all campers are selected in advance and sponsored to attend by the electric cooperative through which they apply.
Locally, potential campers must live in an area served in some capacity by Tipmont, have completed sixth grade and be enrolled with intent to enter seventh grade, and have adequate transportation to and from the camp in Brookston, Ind. Home-schooled students are eligible to apply, provided they meet additional criteria. Students are chosen to attend based on the content of their application.
The online application includes basic information and a brief student essay. Once you have completed and submitted the application, you need not do anything further. Tipmont will reach out if the camper is chosen to attend.
Complete and submit an application to attend at Tipmont’s website. Applications for each year’s Camp Kilowatt open in December of the preceding year (e.g., December 2023 for June 2024). The deadline to apply is March 1.
There is no charge to attend Camp Kilowatt for the children chosen and sponsored by their electric cooperative.
All chaperones are employee representatives of a rural electric membership cooperative (REMC) located in the State of Indiana. Thorough background checks are completed on all chaperones, as well as Camp Tecumseh staff.

A nurse will be available to discuss medical or dietary information upon check-in, and that nurse will also check in medications. Medications must meet the criteria provided to the parents / guardians of campers selected to attend. Chaperones will return medications on the day that campers are picked up.
Chaperones also will be available to meet with parents / guardians and discuss any special requirements for campers before parents / guardians leave camp. Please use this time to discuss any concerns or pertinent information.
Yes. In addition to the nurse, Camp Tecumseh staff are trained and certified for an emergency response. They supervise all camp courses and are available throughout the camp. For more information, visit CampTecumseh.org.
Yes. Further details are provided to parents / guardians of campers selected, including after-hours emergency contact instructions.
No. There is no cellular phone coverage at Camp Tecumseh. If campers are found with cell phones, they will be taken away and returned at the end of camp. Pay phones are available. However, campers are encouraged to spend time making new friends and participating in camp activities. As mentioned above, protocols exist to communicate in the event of an emergency.
Three T-shirts will be provided to wear on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of camp.
Additional details and suggestions will be provided to the parents / guardians of campers chosen, but we recommend:
